Can I participate in the program if I can’t go to the adventure locations?

Absolutely, you can just participate in the reading side of the program and we hope you have fun and enjoy it. Participating in the treasure hunts are optional but a great way to spend a summer day!

How many books do I have to read to complete the program?

To complete the reading side of the program, you must read one book from each section. However, we have chosen some amazing books, so the more books you read, the more badges you collect.

Do I have to own all the books that are recommended?

Not at all, each book listed also has a link to the Vancouver public library simply click the link to see if it is available. All of the books have been curated by the Secret Society of Books and each one is a great read, if you would like to buy them we highly recommend it!

How do I collect badges?

You collect the badges online by completing a mission. Finish reading a book or visiting an adventure place earns you a new badge. For those of you who like to consume books in stacks you can earn a bonus badge by completing all 3 recommended books for each mission.

How many badges are there to collect?

There are 6 missions, if you were to read one book and visit the adventure location for each mission, you could earn 6 reading badges, and 6 adventure badges. However each mission comes with 3 recommended books you can select from, if you choose to read all three per mission, you can collect 12 more bonus badges.

How can I win a sponsored prizes?

Everyone who collects a badge will receive a prize, but everyone who completes the program will receive a free book or prize of choice curated by Secret Society of Books.

Can I tell my friends about the program?

Please do! Spreading a love for reading is always encouraged. You can share through all avenues of social media. We have a Get Out & Read Instagram account where you can follow along on everyone’s adventures. Make sure to use the hashtag #getoutandread on your images!

I have finished my first book, now what?

Log in to your account and take the book quiz for your mission. If you are correct, you receive the coordinates for the hidden location. Once you visit the location and find the hidden adventure box you will find a hidden clue word inside.

This clue word unlocks the explore badge for that mission. If you can’t get out and visit the next spot, you can move on to the next book.

The great part of this program is that you have all summer at your own pace to complete it.

I have unlocked my first explore location, now what?

Congratulations, on your first set of coordinates! Simply enter them into your phone GPS or GPS to follow to the explore box.

Once you are at the location, search for the explore box. Inside of it you will find a hidden clue word. This clue word unlocks the explore badge for that mission. If you can’t get out and visit the next spot, you can move on to the next book.

The great part of this program is that you have all summer at your own pace to complete it.

How do I use my coordinates to explore a location?

Put the coordinates into your maps app on your phone or into your GPS. This will lead you to the hidden adventure box and the hidden clue to unlock the location badge. The boxes are always outside, hidden in nature.

How far are the adventure locations?

The adventure locations can vary in distance depending on where you live. The adventures range from the North Shore to Ladner, but trust us, it’s worth the drive to explore there.

Are the explore boxes pin-pointed exactly on the coordinates?

Yes the boxes are pin-pointed exactly on the coordinates but depending on the device you are using the accuracy may be slightly off.

Each box is subtlety hidden so you may need to do a little searching to locate it.

What do the explore boxes look like?

The boxes vary, you can find a picture here (link ) they are usually tied to the ground or hanging from branches. Please leave the boxes where you found them, but feel free to take a treasure from inside and leave a treasure for the next friend.

There is a notebook inside the adventure box that you can leave a note in or maybe a book recommendation for the next adventurer.

I can’t find the box! What should I do?

If you can’t find the box, you can take a photo and send us an email. We will send you the code.

Is there anything I should bring when I go on an adventure?

It is always good to bring water, wear sunscreen and dress with the proper gear. Don’t forget your phone or GPS to help you find the explore boxes.

Each location is a great place to spend the day outdoors! Other fun things you can bring is our printable nature journal, if you are heading to the beach, buckets with shovels, bring towels, flashlights and you might want to bring your swim suit.

Depending on the time of day you start your adventure it may be good to also bring mosquito repellent.

Do I need to dress a certain way on an adventure?

Every adventure takes you to a new place, dress accordingly. Always bring water, sunscreen and most times a towel. The right shoes are very important, especially for a hike.
